How can schools engage alumni with historic anniversaries or milestones?

Reaching an important milestone or anniversary in your school's history provides a great opportunity for you to reconnect with your alumni community and promote new fundraising campaigns.

Consider inviting your alumni to special events to celebrate these historic occasions. In May, Oakham celebrated 50 years of co-education, inviting back Old Oakhamians who attended the school from 1971 when Oakham first went co-ed. Alumni attended a chapel service and enjoyed afternoon tea in Round House, the first girls’ boarding house at the school. The school has also released a series of podcasts discussing what it means to be co-educational.

Similarly, the Hutchins school marked its 175 year anniversary last year with an Anniversary Week, including its special 175 Anniversary Gala Dinner. This memorable evening was enjoyed by past and present staff, Old Boys, current and past families, and friends of the school, whilst a handful of Year 12 leavers were presented with Anniversary ties to mark this special occasion.

An important milestone or anniversary is also the perfect opportunity to introduce a new fundraising campaign. To mark their centenary year at the Cold Ash campus this year, Downe House launched their new bursary campaign to provide a number of centenary day bursaries to local pupils. Another school to reach an important milestone this year was Churcher's College, who celebrated their tercentenary and used this occasion to encourage alumni to donate to their bursary fund, the Richard Churcher Foundation. Donors who pledged more than £5000 were commended by being awarded automatic membership to the 1722 Society, and had their names featured on a special commemorative plaque.
